Tattoo Removal
Tattoo removal with the Yag laser is a concentrated high intensity light that targets specific areas depending on its wavelength and strength.
The Yag laser for tattoo removal uses four different wavelengths (1064 infared, 532 green, 650 red, and 585 yellow) which are maximally absorbed by blue/black, red/brown, green and blue pigment respectively. The laser tattoo removal is not as well absorbed by other colours. When the pigment absorbs the laser, the light energy is converted to heat and sound, shattering the pigment into smaller particles which are absorbed by the body’s scavenger system. Therefore fading can continue for weeks or even months after each treatment. Freckles, sunspots, café au lait marks and other superficial pigmentation can also be significantly reduced by the Yag laser. Moles and deeper pigmentation have a more variable response.
Tattoo Removal Commonly asked questions
Treatment time depends on the area to be treated and the colours and complexity of the tattoo and this can be discussed at your consultation. Each area will need multiple treatments at approximately six weeks apart.
The procedure is relatively painless (a topical anaesthetic cream is applied one hour before treatment), or anaesthetic is injected into the area. Usually there is no pain after the procedure.
A dressing may be applied as there is often swelling and pinpoint bleeding. Antiseptic or antibiotic creams also may be used. The area needs to be treated gently for three to four days. Sun protection after treatment is important.
Swelling and pinpoint bleeding usually occurs and crusting and scabbing can develop. Most people return to work immediately after treatment. Occasionally blistering can occur as can increased or decreased pigmentation but this is usually transient. Burns, scars and keloid have been reported though this is very rare.
For tattoos, whatever is cleared is permanent and remember clearing continues for months after each treatment. The number of treatments depends on the tattoo, colours and concentration of ink which varies for each patient. For pigmentation, lightening continues with each treatment but sun exposure may cause repigmentation so sun care is very important.
The Yag Medlite is extremely popular as a skin cleaner and rejuvenation with no down time. It takes just a few minutes and can be very effective.
