Gynecomastia Surgery

Male Breast reduction, Gynecomastia Surgery is now a very common procedure remodeling the male chest, removing the excessive development of “man boobs”.

Male Breast Reduction

Male Breast Reduction is a common concern to men of all ages is the development of large breasts that take on the appearance of a female breast. Often men with gynecomastia, are embarrassed to take their shirts off at the beach, as they are self conscious. This often runs in families and occasionally is caused by hormones but usually happens for no reason.

Male Breast Reduction /Gynecomastia Surgery

Dr Lanzer has been treating Male Breast reduction referred to as gynecomastia for years and has performed this procedure many hundreds of times. The male breast reduction procedure initially involves a regular liposuction using the method of superficial liposculpture. Dr Lanzer is able to fully release the thick breast tissue that lies under the nipple. If necessary, Dr Lanzer then makes a small incision between 1-2cms along the edge of the lower border of the nipple and removes the excessive breast tissue. Sometimes this thickened breast tissue can be the size of 1 or 2 golf balls. The tissue is always sent to pathology for analysis. Most men can resume work in 1-2 days and a compression garment is initially worn.

Why Male Breast Reduction Surgery?

Often swellings on the male chest are not from excess fat, but by an anomalous accentuation of the mammary gland. There are different reasons for this: hormonal or chromosomal problems, and obesity.

Media reviews

A Current Affair Channel 9 October Extract

Dr Lanzer was featured on “A Current Affair” explaining Male Breast reduction surgery.

Patients had widespread Megaliposuction using the superficial Liposuction Technique and breast reduction.

Hi-Definition Liposculpture may create athletic grooves in stomach area, which has also been featured on television a few times.

Advantages of the Tumescent Method

  • Numbs the area so that the procedure does not necessarily require a general anaesthetic, and post surgery discomfort is reduced.

  • Seals the blood vessels so that there is little or no bleeding, resulting in safer liposuction and less bruising. There is generally no need for intravenous ‘drips’ or blood transfusions.

  • Softens the fat so that it comes out smoothly and evenly, allowing much greater amounts of fat to be removed safely.

  • The fluid used is anti-bacterial so that infection is extremely rare.

  • New techniques have resulted in many more patients requesting this treatment.

  • Allows superficial liposuction method and removal of the breast tissue with a limited incision size.

Male Breast Reduction – Procedure Technique

First Dr Lanzer will mark out the areas on your chest for the male breast reduction. . This allows for an accurate targeting of fat. Next a large amount of fluid is infused into the target treatment areas, before the suction is performed. This fluid consists of saline solution, local anaesthetic (xylocaine) and adrenalin (a vasoconstrictor); the term “tumescent” actually refers to the “turgid” state of the tissues into which the solution has been infiltrated. The fatty component of the male breast is initially reduced by carrying out a Tumescent Liposuction of the breast. The glandular tissue may be present in about half of the patients and is removed by making a small incision about 1-2cm along the lower edge of the nipple tissue.

Recovery

After the Male Breast reduction surgery, a compression garment designed for gynaecomastia has to be worn for two weeks full-time then two weeks part-time.

Common Questions

Do I need to be asleep during liposculpture surgery?

You can have the procedure under a local anesthetic (injections) where you may feel nothing or a sensation of swelling. Occasionally pain can be felt especially on the skin edges. Many patients prefer deep sedation or a general anesthetic.

How long does the procedure take?

Dr Lanzer has improved his technique having performed this surgery many hundreds of times and the liposuction is generally completed in an hour. When performed under local anesthetic the procedure takes longer as we need to allow time for the fat to become numb.

Where is the surgery performed?

The surgery is performed in Dr Lanzer’s Day Surgery Centre. Recovery is enhanced by our beautiful recovery area under the magnificent dome! Dr Lanzer can arrange for transport to your home with a medical taxi or to a nursing care centre for your post operative care.

Can other areas be treated?

Many patients have Liposculpture and combine it with Hi Definition which creates an athletic look to your stomach. View more information on the Hi-Def Liposculpture Page.

What happens after the operation and will I have any dressings?

Ice should be applied for the first 24 hrs (20mins on + 20mins off) over the top of your garment, after surgery whilst you are awake. You will have dressings on the areas treated and there will be oozing of liquid for about 24 hours after the procedure. A firm garment eg: girdle or liposuction garment is worn after liposuction. Ideally they should be worn continuously for two weeks after the procedure and then for half the time for a further two weeks. Dr Lanzer’s staff can arrange the appropriate garments for you.

When can I resume work?

You may be able to resume work within 1 week. Occasionally patients get back to work within 2 days. You should not resume heavy exercise for atleast two weeks.

How long do the effects of the liposuction last?

The effects are usually permanent however if you put weight on later, the fat cells can return in that area, although the fat tends to accumulate in other areas first.

Do I need to take any medication?

You will need to take a course of antibiotics to guard against infection; they commence the day before the procedure.

Are there any risks?

As with any surgery, there are risks. Infection is the most serious risk but is extremely rare due to the antiseptic tumescent fluid, pre-operative antibiotics and sterile techniques. Dr Lanzer has not had any case of infection in this area. Loose skin, temporary numbness and irregularities may occur. A small scar may be visible on the lower edge of the nipple if the excision of tissue was required.
