Sizable options “breast enlargement or reduction”
Dr Lanzer pioneers new breast enlargement or reduction for women without the major cutting surgery
Dr Daniel Lanzer writes:
Some women have large breasts that cause back pain, pain from the bra straps and headaches, reducing the weight relieves the problem.
Breast reduction: Dr Daniel Lanzer helped pioneer the concept of reducing breast size via liposuction. ‘Breast reduction can be performed for both aesthetic and physical reasons, to relieve symptoms such as pain in the breast, shoulder and neck and upper spinal problems. Patients looking to reduce the size of their breasts often have concerns about ‘going under the knife’ for surgical mammoplasty, which is the well-known option for breast reduction.
Breast reduction can also be carried out using a form of liposuction in some cases. ‘Liposuction can be used to remove both large and small amounts of fat,’ he says. ‘the procedure can reduce the breasts by a significant amount, depending on how much removable fat is available.’
This method can remove up to two and a half litres of fat from one or both breasts without cutting out skin or tissue, making it also suitable for correcting asymmetrical breasts. Breasts can ultimately be reduced by one to four sizes, depending on the patient.
‘The amount of removable fat varies between patients – generally older patients have more fat in their breasts than younger patients. using a mammogram during the consultation process this helps establish how much fat can safely be removed.
‘Often large breasts are associated with a breast ‘tail’, where the fat continues around the side of the chest and under the axillae (armpit). This can also be removed with liposuction’. The advantages of using the liposuction technique to reduce breast size can include minimal pain, swelling and almost no scarring except the 2 small key hole incisions. ‘The technique involves two small surgical nicks under the breast where the cannulae are inserted, usually leaving no significant scarring. Patients can typically return to work within a few days.’ ‘In my experience, patients are very satisfied with this procedure as it relieves them from the discomfort associated with very large breasts.
Breast augmentation
The standard procedure to enlarge breasts involves surgically inserting an implant, there is another option for increasing breast size: employing fat transfer using liposuction. ‘The breasts can be enlarged using the patient’s own body fat by transferring it from another part of the body that has excess fat, such as the thighs. ‘The fat is removed using liposuction and then injected into the breast. I use the tumescent vaser liposuction system. ‘I believe the main advantage of vaser is that it liquefies the fat beforehand, which makes it much easier to suction out without harming the surrounding tissues,’ he explains.
It has been suggested that the laser better dissolves the bonds between fat cells so that the fat cells have a better chance to survive in the breast when they are in smaller clusters on individual cells. ‘In typical cases, patients can increase their breasts by one to two sizes, depending on the individual and the amount of removable fat available for transfer. ‘One of the most appealing advantages of this option for many patients is that it uses the patient’s own body fat and not a foreign material.. ‘The procedure can be ideal for liposuction patients who are interested in breast enlargement, as the procedures can be performed at the same time.’ ‘I’ve found that patients who have opted for fat transfer using vaser liposuction to augment the breasts have been satisfied with the less invasive nature of this procedure.
